Sarah Hurni

Sarah Hurni is a sophomore student studying environmental horticulture with a minor in agriculture business minor.  Hurni has been collecting plants since she was a freshman at Virginia Tech. Hurni became an environmental horticulture major after applying with the major as a means to get into Virginia Tech.  

“I’ve always liked plants- I think everyone kind of likes plants- but I never thought of it as a career option until I came here and had the professor that I really liked and he started to encourage me with other options.”

Once she began taking classes, she discovered her love of plants and her passion for foliage. Hurni’s professional aspirations are to work at a Marijuana Dispensary. In preparation, she will be interning with a landscaping company and fertilizing and managing their plant specimens.   

Tully Saul

Tully Saul is a senior studying civil engineering.  He is involved in Virginia Tech’s a cappella group known as Mixed Emotions.  Saul has accumulated a collection of antique cups and spoons after being inspired by his grandfather to appreciate the finer things in life.  Saul has a passion for finding disheveled spoons and cups and restoring them to their former glory.

“I guess I don’t really think of them as a collection, I just see things that I like. Things that you’re interested in, I think you tend to accumulate and it sort of turns into a collection”

Saul has found treasures such as Tiffany champagne flutes and scotch glasses.  Saul has used his passion of antiquing to learn skills such as how to decanter wine. His passion for antique spoons and cups allows him to explore a unique niche that typically goes unnoticed.  

Bryce Detterman

Brice Detterman is a junior at Virginia Tech studying civil engineering.  In his free time Detterman practices what is known as “hooping”. Hooping involves using hula hoops and manipulating them to create an illusion, similar to a form of dance.  Hooping utilizes the hula hoop prop and propels the prop around the shoulders, arms, and torso to create the flow art form.

“At first it was a lot harder and I wasn’t as passionate about it but once I got comfortable doing it, it was much easier to find my flow and now I see it as an outlet for expression.”

Detterman has attended EDM festivals that perform this type of flow art since his senior year of high school.  Through attending these festivals Detterman was able to find his niche in the EDM world. Detterman has been involved in the art of hooping for 3 years and learned his craft through youtube tutorials and receiving tips from his cousin.  He has found his passion through hooping and considers it his way of expressing himself.
